Fry ham and two peeled onions thoroughly in margarine. Add 3/4 liter water (about 3 cups) and simmer for another one and a quarter hours.

Peel the turnips like apples removing the fine leaves from the trunk. Put into a large pot with the other ingredients and boil for about 20 minutes until everything is soft.
